Some private boats that use the Preserve our Wrecks moorings have been tying knots in the mooring line in order to reduce the scope of the down line. This procedure has very detrimental consequences to the mooring line. Tying knots in the line drastically reduces it's life and the larger craft using the lines are left with not enough scope in heavy weather which further damages the line and the mooring block below.
